Obituary of Woon Chong "John" Chan

Woon Chong Chan "John", 65, our generous, humble, resourceful, and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2019 at his home in Saginaw Township. John was born on March 13th, 1954 in Guangzhou, China (formerly Canton), the son of the late Yau Chi Chan and Ling Choy Lee Chan. John had an entrepreneurial spirit from a very young age. When he was a young boy he would catch fish and then ride his bike into the city to sell them. He was a handyman, he built homes and built the furniture for his family's home. John moved to the United States in 1979 and initially learned English by watching cartoons and Sesame Street. He later refined his English proficiency with two years of formal education in English as a Second Language. In June of 2005, after studying hard, became a U.S. citizen. In 1985, John met the former Theresa May Courser at the Lamplighter Lounge; it was true love at first sight. His friends bet him he could not get a date with her, as many had tried before. John took this challenge and 34 years later, here we are! John and Theresa were married June 29th, 1990 and shared over 29 years, three children, and countless memories. After working in a few Chinese Restaurants, he discussed with Theresa that he wanted to open his own. John and Theresa opened Jade Garden Chinese Restaurant in December of 1987 and were Owner/Operators for 32 years. John also loved to tinker and could fix anything; from purses to juicers, to so, so many toys. John loved to spend time by the water at Hubbard Lake and was sometimes hard to find because he would run off and visit all of the neighbors. He loved gardening and always enjoyed the fruits, veggies, and beautiful flowers. He loved to feed people and entertain. He was always coming up with a new recipe for Jungle Juice. Jungle Juice was sneaky, it didn't taste like alcohol, but you knew when you stood up that you shouldn't have too many glasses. You would never go hungry in John's house. As soon as you come to visit, he would ask "you hungry?" and even if you weren't, he'd make you food anyways. John loved to vacation with his wife, and best friends, Tony and Jill Chan. He enjoyed traveling and road trips, always wanting to go find somewhere new. John loved fish; he built a Koi Pond and loved to sit and watch them swim, he would sometimes even pet them :). While he loved to watch the fish, he never sat too long because John always had to be busy building or fixing something. The only time you would see him sit down for a long period of time was when he was watching movies, most likely Westerns. John was like a father to many and had the most beautiful smile. His infectious, fun-loving soul will be missed dearly, and lovingly remembered for generations to come. John leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Theresa; children, Trisha Leavitt, Alan Chan, and Eric Chan; Subie (Grand Puppy); siblings, Chao Zhen Lee (Sister-in-law), Woon Sun “Johnson” Chan (Brother) and Shao Fang “Lisa” Chan (Sister-in-law), Sau “Sylvia” Ha Lee (Sister) and Robert Lee (Brother-in-law), Xiu Lan Liu (Sister) and Quan Liu (Brother-in-law), Jin Xiu Chan (Sister-in-law), Woon Hing “Henry” Chan (Brother) and Tina Yueh Chieh Chan (Sister-in-law), May Sau Ho (Sister) and Wing Choon Ho (Brother-in-law); Theresa’s siblings, Gloria and Dan Pittsley, Marsha Courser, Terry and Jan Courser, Dan and Georgeann Courser, Charlotte McCormick, Jack and Lori Courser, Tim Courser, Patricia Wilkes, Mike and Linda Courser and Dave Courser.
