Obituary of Lois C. (Benard) Schram, LPN, BSW

Lois C. Schram, LPN, BSW, 101, of Saginaw, our loving, meticulous, energetic, and most gracious matriarch was born into eternal life on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Great Lakes Rehab Center in Saginaw, where Lois was the most senior resident. Lois was born in Hancock, Michigan on July 8, 1918, the daughter of the late Dennis Joseph and Theolin (de Longchamp) Benard, one of eight children of French and Irish descent. Lois was 18 months old when they traveled by train to Pontiac, Michigan, where she attended St. Fred’s Catholic School and married Orville Schram in 1937. In 1950, Lois and Orv moved to Saginaw with their two children, Jimmie and Susie, so Orv could manage the Seven Up Bottling Warehouse. Four years later, their son, Gary, was born. In 1967, Lois graduated from the Saginaw School of Practical Nursing at 49 years old and began working for St. Luke’s and St. Mary’s Hospitals. She returned to Delta College and later Saginaw Valley State University, graduating in 1980 at the ripe young age of 62! Lois participated in the P.T.A. at St. Helen’s Catholic School, taught patients at St. Luke’s Hospital on the alcoholism floor, and for over 57 years was a friend of Bill W. It was in her nature to help others. She lived at Edgewood Assisted Living for five years, where she met Clarion “Gil” Gielczyk, and fell in love at the age of 93. While there, she started writing poems and wrote, “Love in the Twilight Years.” Sadly, after three years, her new love passed on. Living over 100 years, Lois certainly saw and did many things, but her greatest gift to her three children was teaching the importance of supporting and loving their families. Lois was a great homemaker, party planner, and mother. She enjoyed baking, was an excellent cook, and always made Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter a loving, beautiful, and fun time for family and friends. She always remained exceedingly grateful for her long life, Catholic faith, loving family, nurses, and friends. Lois will be deeply missed, yet lovingly remembered for generations to come. Lois leaves to carry on her legacy, her three children: Jimmy “Red” (Joanne) Schram of Skidway Lake; Gary (Karen) Schram of Indian River, and Susie (Frank) Lopes of Luna Pier; grandchildren, Brandon Solano, Stacy Dawe, Paige Olvares, Jennifer Schram, and Mathew Schram, and thirteen great-grandchildren. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Orville, in 2005, after 68 years of marriage, along with seven siblings. Cremation has taken place and a private Memorial Liturgy will be held at Christ the Good Shephard Parish (St. Helen Church). In lieu of flowers or memorial contributions, Lois’ children kindly request a random act of kindness for someone in need to honor their mother. Final arrangements have been entrusted to Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services (formerly Reitz-Herzberg), 1550 Midland Rd., between State & Gratiot. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family online at www.skorupskis.com.
