Obituary of Irene Lucille Hanes
Irene Lucille Hanes, 101, of Vassar, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother went home to the Lord on July 12, 2019, at Vassar Fields with her family by her side. Irene was born on January 2, 1918, in Saginaw, the daughter of the late Roy Francis and Marie (Russell) Henderson. Irene graduated from Arthur Hill High School, class of 1935. It was during high school when Irene met the love of her life in the Epworth League at First United Methodist of Saginaw, Ralph W. Hanes. They dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on June 7, 1941. Sadly, Ralph preceded her in death on May 21, 2001. Irene worked for Consumers Energy and was also a chairman on the Election Board for the City of Saginaw. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, the oldest member at the time of her passing, a life member of DAV Auxilary – Chapter 4, and a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Throughout life, Irene enjoyed traveling, dancing, playing cards, reading, and bowling. Irene was always on the go and always made sure her family was well cared for. She will be missed dearly. Irene leaves to carry on her legacy, her children, Carol (Dale) Smith and Gerald (fiancé, Joni St. Charles;) grandchildren, Robert W. (Michelle) Smith, Stephen S. Smith, Jerri-lynn (Aaron) Tasior, and Ryan (Carolyne) Hanes; great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Jason, Lexi, Jordyn, and Nolan Smith, Cassie and Alyssa Tasior, Cody, Elizabeth, Kalee, Billy, and Emily Hanes, along with her sister-in-law, Doris Hanes. In addition to her husband and parents, Irene was welcomed home to heaven by her children, Ronald William Hanes and Nancy Irene Hanes; in-laws, Jim Hanes and Bob (Jean) Hanes; and her dearest friend, Jane Purcell. Irene’s family will be present to receive visitors on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and then again on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, from 10:00 AM until the time of her 11:00 AM Life Celebration at Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services (formerly Reitz-Herzberg), 1550 Midland Rd., between State & Gratiot. Reverend Mark Karls and Reverend Amy Terhune will officiate with interment to follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Vassar Fields and Wellspring Hospice for their compassionate care.
