Obituary of David Edward Kolhagen
David Edward Kolhagen, 65, of Freeland, our generous, friendly, and larger-than-life husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at his home, surrounded by his family. David was born in Saginaw on July 15, 1953, the son of the late Donald and Shirley (Allore) Kolhagen. He graduated from Buena Vista High School with the Class of 1971. While at the bowling alley bar located on Dixie Highway, David met the former Cheryl A. Albosta. They dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on July 19, 1975 at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Buena Vista Twp. David started his career at age 15 with the McDonald Corporation, working his way up to managing several restaurants in Saginaw, Bay City, Freeland, Alma, Auburn, and Traverse City. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Reese and completed his career in Midland. An avid sports card enthusiast, David will always be remembered for his love of the Detroit Red Wings. He enjoyed time spent at the cabin in AuGres and loved frequenting the beach in Tawas. David was never short of an opinion or a joke, he was a friend to all, and never met a stranger. Above all he, loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. “Grandpa Dave” was always their #1 fan at all of their games and activities. David attended Peace Lutheran Church and will be deeply missed, yet lovingly remembered for years to come. David leaves to carry on his legacy, his loving wife of 44 years, Cheryl Kolhagen; daughter, Shannon (Mitch) Foss, who was the light of his life; beloved and precious grandchildren, Karsten Mitchell and Nevaeh Marie; brothers, John (Kathleen) Kolhagen and Mark Kolhagen; sister-in-law, Suzanne Merrill; brothers-in-law, Randy (Ruth) Albosta and Larry (Diane) Albosta; special childhood friend, Larry (Linda) Lapak; dear family friend, Debra Tighe; Godchildren, Lauren Tighe and Larry Lapak, Jr., along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, David was welcomed home to heaven by his brother-in-law, Jock M. Merrill; his in-laws, Clarence & Gloria Albosta, and good family friend Richard Honig. David’s family will be present to receive visitors on Saturday, April 6, 2019 from 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 6:00 PM Life Celebration at Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services (formerly Reitz-Herzberg), 1550 Midland Rd., between State & Gratiot.
