Obituary of Frederick I. Nowak
Frederick I. Nowak, affectionately known by many as “Rick,” 71, of Essexville, our loving and selfless husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Fred was born in Bay City on July 23, 1946, the son of the late Alvin and Wanda (Budzinski) Nowak. He graduated from St. Stan’s High School, attended Delta College, and proudly served Vietnam as a Spec5 in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968. On June 26, 1971, Fred was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Oblender in Bethel Lutheran Church. Their 46 years were blessed with three children and five grandchildren. After 39 years of service, Fred retired from General Motors - Powertrain, where he was a skilled trade tool and die maker. Fred was a past commander of the P.L.A.V. Post 162 and American Legion Post 18. He loved to play cards with family and friends, and was the number one attendee and fan at all his children and grandchildren’s games and events. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, Fred had a love for gardening, landscaping, and maintaining his yard. He also enjoyed traveling, especially on bus trips, which took him coast to coast, creating many memories, and staying a true Lions fan, no matter how many times they let him down. In addition to Dorothy, Fred leaves to cherish his memory, his three children: Jennifer (Max) Westphal, John Nowak (Michelle Wiedyk), and Jeffrey Nowak; grandchildren, Aiden & Tristan Westphal, Collin & Kaitlyn Nowak, and Madden Nowak; siblings, Paul (MaryAnn) Nowak, James Nowak, Sally Galloway, Patricia (Stanley) Taylor; in-laws, Marion (Douglas) Markillie, Kathie Leppek, and Janet Majeske, along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Fred was welcomed home to heaven by his father and mother-in-law, Godfrey and Frieda (Voss) Oblender; in-laws, Kristine Nowak, Richard Leppek, and Roy Majeske, and his nephew, Frankie Galloway. Fred’s family will be present to receive visitors on Monday, January 1, 2018 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 955 N. Pine Rd., Hampton Twp.
