Obituary of Henry Charles "Hank" Van Hoost
Henry Charles “Hank” Van Hoost, 95, of Unionville, our loving father and grandfather was born into eternal life on the evening of Saturday, January 20, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his family. Hank was born in Essexville on October 24, 1922, the son of the late August and Romanie (Vandenberghe) Van Hoost. He graduated from Tuttleville Country School and went on to meet the former Barbara Retzler. They fell in love and were united in marriage on November 14, 1942 at B.V.M. Catholic Church in Sebewaing. Sadly, Barbara preceded Hank in death on October 7, 2003. With a true love for the land, Hank went on to become a lifelong farmer and patriarch of VanHoost Farms. He loved dancing, especially to polka music, caring for his horses, and collecting antique farm equipment and tools. Hank was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Farm Bureau, Sugar Beet Growers Association, and Thumb Draft Horse Association. His strong work ethic and guiding ways will live on for generations to come. Left to cherish Hank’s memory are his six children: Larry (Margaret) Van Hoost, Terry (Virginia) Van Hoost, Garry Van Hoost, Jacquelyn Karnath, Marlene Van Hoost, and Christie Van Hoost; grandchildren, Rocal Van Hoost, Michael (Carol) Van Hoost, Kurt (Dawn) Van Hoost, Brooke Van Hoost (Lyle Keyes), Jenna Golden, Kimberly (Tom) Fulcher, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild on the way; brother-in-law, Richard Retzler, and sister-in-law, Lillian Retzler. In addition to his parents and wife, Hank was welcomed home to heaven by his daughter-in-law, Karen (Hoppe) VanHoost; son-in-law, John “Trapper” Karnath, and in-laws, Peter & June Leiterman, James & Marge Galmish, Donald Retzler, and Joan Retzler. Hank’s family will be present to receive visitors on Saturday, January 27, 2018 from 10:00 AM until his 11:00 AM Memorial Liturgy at Our Lady Consolata Parish (Holy Family Church), 8370 Unionville Rd., Sebewaing. Fr. Christian Tabares will officiate with the Rite of Committal to be held privately in Holy Family Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to ACW Ambulance or Our Lady Consolata Parish.
