Obituary of Richard August Gavord, Sr.
Richard August Gavord, Sr., 87, of Bay City, our hard-working, loveable, generous, charitable, and most devoted husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend was born into eternal life on the evening of Friday, July 21, 2017 at McLaren Bay Region. Rich was born in Bay City on May 7, 1930, the son of the late August and Victoria (Piotrowski) Gavord. At the age of 16, he happened to meet the sister of a friend, the former Catherine Snyder. When Catherine gave Richard a kiss, he instantly turned beet red. He started coming over more often and eventually they dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on July 8, 1950. Their marriage was blessed with 67 years, eight children, and countless memories. Throughout life, Rich was known for his strong work ethic and as a teenager he began working for Keit’s Greenhouse. He then started work at Defoe Shipbuilding Company and eventually worked and retired from General Motors – Grey Iron Foundry in 1989. There wasn’t anything Richard wouldn’t do for his wife or children. The house was always filled with jokes, laughter, and everyone could count on coffee and good conversations on Sunday mornings. He was content with life having Catherine by his side and was known for his love of country music, working on carriages, and in his later years, scratch off tickets. He was most at peace walking in the woods and often enjoyed time spent in his younger years at the family cabin in St. Helen. Richard leaves to cherish his memory, his best friend and love of his life, Catherine Gavord and their five sons and three daughters: Richard (Patty) Gavord, Jr., Gary (Jerri) Gavord, Barb (Joe) Rule, Dale (Lon) Gavord, Sherry (Ernie) Simmons, Patty Seifferly (Dave Kiley), Danny (Lucy) Gavord, and Tim Gavord. Their family grew with 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. His memory will remain alive in the hearts of his brother, Ronald Gavord; five sisters, Virginia Reed, Marlene Tomszak, Shirley Bayette, Mary Fisher, Sharon Harrison; in-laws, Kenny Walker, Tootsie Snyder, and Diane Snyder, along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Richard was welcomed home to heaven by his brother, Jim Gavord; brothers-in-law, Bob Bayette and Clyde Fisher, along with many in-laws and extended family. Richard’s family will be present to receive visitors on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 from 10:00 AM until the time of Richard’s 11:00 AM Tribute Ceremony at Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 955 N. Pine Rd., Hampton Twp. The Rite of Committal will follow in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
