Obituary of Rolland DeJohn

Rolland Richard DeJohn, 94, of Essexville, our patriotic and devoted father, pop, papa, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at his home. Rolland was born in Syracuse, New York on October 13, 1922, one of nine children to the late Albert and Lena (Belfrey) DeJohn. Rolland enlisted after Pearl Harbor and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a gunner on a B-24 liberator in the pacific. Before going overseas, he met the love of his life, Ann Brightwell at Walnut Ridge Air Force Base, Arkansas in the base parachute shop. They dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on April 8, 1946. Rolland and Ann moved to Kalamazoo after the war for employment. He then enlisted in the newly formed U.S. Air Force Reserves and was activated for the Korean Conflict. Rolland then made the Air Force a career, with his last assignment as the NCOIC for recruiting in the Bay City – Saginaw – Flint area. He retired in 1966 as a Master Sgt. While in the Air Force, Rolland was always taking college classes and earned his teaching certificate. After retiring from the Air Force, Rolland began teaching at Bridgeport Junior High School. He was an avid bowler and at the age of 89 bowled one of many 300 games. His passion for bowling continued until age 92. He leaves to cherish his memory his son, John DeJohn and fiancé, Bette Jo Lipinski. He was the most supportive “Pop” of Jay and wife, Karrie Wheeler, and their daughter, Hannah who always brought a bright smile to Rolland’s face. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Gloria Wheeler; sisters, Rita Daniels and Lenore Crowley, both of Florida, many nieces and nephews, and other family members include Krissy Zawacki and Nikki Starks. In addition to his parents, Rolland was welcomed home to heaven by his loving wife, Ann, son, Jerry Wheeler, and siblings, Art, Albert, Sidney, Francis, Rosemary, and Esther. Rolland’s family will be present to receive visitors on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 10:00 AM until the time of his 11:00 AM Tribute Ceremony at Skorupski Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 955 N.
